IP Attorney


Neural Analytics, a fast-paced medical device company, is leading innovation for brain health assessment and is seeking an in-house Patent Attorney to grow and manage our expanding IP portfolio.  The successful candidate will develop strategies for IP protection, with an emphasis on patent and trademark preparation, maintaining an IP focused culture within the company and counseling our growing team.


The successful candidate will be outgoing, highly motivated, self-driven and will be able to work in a multidisciplinary environment interacting with both R&D and business leaders focused on rapid startup growth.  The ideal Patent Attorney candidate will have a background in robotics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science and/or machine learning.  This position requires a passion for business development within a startup environment and the ability to dynamically adapt to take on a leadership role within the company.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Work in team environment to manage intellectual property portfolio; including IP strategies, patent and trademark preparation and data science trade secret strategies.
  • Foster intellectual property culture within the company, working across all departments to drive dynamic IP growth.
  • Prepare and prosecute domestic and foreign patent applications and trademark applications.
  • Assist with technology transfers.
  • Assist with Freedom to Operate (FTO) such as analyzing third party patents.
  • Prepare IP due diligence for licensing and partnership deals.
  • Work with and direct outside counsel as needed.
  • Collaborate with business development team to negotiate and draft agreements for corporate development.
  • Assist with additional day to day agreements such as lease negotiations, NDAs, etc.


Minimum Requirements:

  • J.D. degree, admitted to practice law in California.
  • Registered to practice before the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office).
  • At least 1-3 years of patent law experience, including preparation and prosecution of patents, license agreements and business contracts.
  • BS or above in an engineering or science field (mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or computer science).
  • Working knowledge of software and data science.
  • Strong academic credentials.
  • Ability to lead and make strategic decisions.
  • Passion for the startup environment.  
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
